In the Buddha's teachings, the law of cause and effect paticcasamuppada or the conditions of universal phenomena, is an important topic. Greed lobha, hatred dosa and ignorance (i.e. self-delusion) moha are the three main causes mula that lead to misery in the world. When someone strives for it to escape this unpleasant condition, one must get rid of of the underlying lust and hatred because of the ignorance of the true nature of things. Conflicts arise because of various evil factors in people's minds. Control over such factors as greed, jealousy, hatred, torment, envy, etc, are guaranteed to lead peace. For an individual person can permanent peace only develop when a person has completely rid himself of these mental defilements. This provides a basis for peaceful dialogues between individuals can lead to a peaceful and harmonious life for all. It is however not said that this always applies, because there are also people on the world that are not free from unwholesome mental factors.
At some point, petty bickering arose between the peasants on either side of the Rohini River. This river acted as a border between the kingdom of the Sakyas and the kingdom of the Koliyas. Each of them tried to direct so much water to their own fields if possible. This eventually led to a heated conflict between the armies of the two kingdoms. At some point the Buddha on the battlefield and warned them about the bad consequences of war and the benefits of achieving a peaceful settlement. Thus war was averted and peace restored. It's worth noting that the Buddha was the only religious teacher to ever touch the battlefield personally visited and acted as a true mediator to to prevent war.
