The first speech

The Buddha sets the Wheel of Law in motion...

After realizing the Four Noble Truths of his own accord, the Buddha decided to preach his teachings to the five disciples who previously in Uruvela (now Bodh Gaya) as a teacher and now in the Deer Park from Isipatana stayed. The Buddha's first speech is known as the Dhamma Cakka Ppavattana Sutta - Moving the Wheel of Law. This summarizes the basics of Buddhism:

  1. the noble truth of suffering;
  2. the noble truth of the cause of suffering;
  3. the noble truth of the elimination of suffering;
  4. the noble truth of the path that leads to the cessation of suffering.

During this speech, one of the disciples, the Reverend, arose Kondañña the passionless, immaculate vision of truth: "All that nature of rising, also has the nature of perishing in it[1]." The Venerable Kondañña acquired the first degree of holiness sotapatti. In the speech that followed, the Anatta Lakkhana Sutta - The Characters of Not-Self, all five disciples attained the highest degree of holiness, Arahatship Arahatta.
